Rep. Bill Werkheiser Meets with Labor Commissioner

ATLANTA – State Representative Bill Werkheiser (R-Glennville), Chairman of the House Industry and Labor Committee, and members of the House Industry and Labor Committee recently met with Georgia Department of Labor Commissioner Mark Butler and other Department of Labor officials on Thursday, August 22. The purpose of the meeting was to update members on the various divisions and services provided by the department.

“We had a very productive meeting last week with Commissioner Butler and his staff,” said Rep. Werkheiser. “The Department of Labor’s Business Services Unit provided good news that Georgia’s unemployment is one of the lowest in the nation and is lower than the national average at 3.6 percent. The better news is that two new major companies are looking to locate in Georgia because our state is the number one state to do business and also because of the Department of Labor’s work to link new employers with a qualified workforce.”

Members of the House Industry and Labor Committee met with officials to discuss unemployment insurance, workforce solutions, the business services unit, IT modernization and workforce statistics and economic research.

“The information presented by the Department of Labor’s Workforce Solutions Unit was equally as impressive,” added Rep. Werkheiser. “This unit provides specialized services to veterans, farmers and high school graduates, in addition to assisting employees and employers faced with sudden and/or unexpected downsizing layoffs and business closures.”

“The Department of Labor’s services are very comprehensive, and the security of that information is critical to maintaining Georgia’s business friendly atmosphere and the trust of all Georgians,” said Rep. Werkheiser. “The department’s IT division has increased security and protections for the public, while cutting costs and saving the state millions of dollars.”

Representative Bill Werkheiser represents the citizens of District 157, which includes Evans and Tattnall counties and portions of Wayne County. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 2014 and currently serves as Chairman of the Industry and Labor Committee. He also serves on the Appropriations Subcommittee on Public Safety and on the Energy, Utilities & Telecommunications, Juvenile Justice, Public Safety & Homeland Security and State Properties committees.
