ATLANTA – State Representative Bob Bryant (D-Garden City) was recently appointed to serve on the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) Budgets and Revenue Committee by House Speaker David Ralston (R-Blue Ridge). Rep. Bryant will serve a two year term running through 2012.
“While our state and national economies are showing signs of recovery, our state revenues inch up slowly as thousands of Georgians continue to look for jobs,” said Representative Bryant. “As a member of the NCSL Budget & Revenue Committee, I will work with state leaders from around the country to find new and creative ways to effectively improve Georgia’s economic conditions and make the best use of our limited state budge resources.”
The Budgets and Revenue Committee is one of NCSL’s 12 standing committees. These standing committees serve an important role in representing state interests in Washington, D.C. and the facilitation of policy innovation among the state and territorial legislatures. The committees also provide a unique forum for the discussion of major issues facing the states, which allows legislators to learn from the experiences of other states.
According to NCSL, its Budget & Revenue Committee is charged with protecting states’ interests in federal decisions regarding fiscal matters, including the federal budget. The committee also examines federal and state policies with fiscal implications, like funding for services and programs, budget processes, tax and revenue systems, legislative oversight, unfunded mandates, and state-local fiscal relations.
In addition to his position on the NCSL committee, Rep. Bryant is also a member of the Ways & Means Committee in the Georgia House of Representatives, which is responsible for state tax and revenue legislation.
NCSL is a bipartisan organization that serves legislators and staffs from the nation’s 50 states. It provides research, technical assistance and opportunities for policymakers to exchange ideas on the most pressing state issues and is an effective and respected advocate for the interests of the states in the American federal system.
