ATLANTA – State Representative Bruce Williamson (R-Monroe) lauds Governor Nathan Deal’s launch of Georgia STABLE on June 14, 2017. Georgia STABLE is a tax-free savings program for eligible individuals with disabilities.
“I applaud Governor Deal for launching Georgia STABLE and am excited to see the positive effects that this program will have on Georgians with disabilities,” said. Rep. Williamson. “As the Chair of the Ways and Means subcommittee that oversaw this bill and helped ensure its passage during the 2016 legislative session, I am pleased to see this policy put into action to improve the quality of life for so many Georgians.”
Georgia STABLE is administered by the Georgia Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Program Corporation which was established by House Bill 768 during the 2016 legislative session. Modeled after the federal ABLE Act, this program allows disabled individuals to save private funds in accounts to pay for qualified disability expenses, such as education, health care, housing and transportation, without becoming ineligible for Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits or Social Security Disability Insurance. The funds in STABLE accounts are not subject to federal or state income tax if spent on qualifying expenses. Up to $14,000 may be contributed to each account annually, and contributions can continue to be made until the account balance reaches $445,000.
