ATLANTA – State Representative Rhonda Burnough (D-Riverdale) that she will join First Lady Sandra Deal to read to fourth grade students at Tara Elementary School in Morrow.
“We are so excited to have First Lady Deal continue the Celebrity Reader tradition at Tara Elementary School this year,” said Rep. Burnough. “It has been proven that reading aloud helps students learn how to use language to make sense of the world through vocabulary, comprehension, and information processing skills, as well as motivating them to read more on their own. As a former Georgia public school teacher herself and leader in the Get Georgia Reading campaign, First Lady Deal understands the importance and value of getting kids engaged with reading.”
Rep. Burnough’s career in Clayton County Public Schools began at Tara Elementary in 1995, which is why this school was chosen. While working as a teacher, Rep. Burnough put together a reading initiative to allow members of the community to come into the classroom and read to students. In 2008, Celebrity Reader came into fruition, and by 2013 more than 400 community readers participated in the program.
