Rep. Cannon Makes Constituents Aware of Homestead Exemption Application Deadline

ATLANTA – State Representative Park Cannon (D-Atlanta) seeks to make constituents aware of the Fulton County homestead exemption application deadline on Friday, April 1, 2022.

“I will continue to keep working on homestead exemption legislation as the chair of the affordable housing committee within the Atlanta Legislative Delegation,” said Rep. Cannon. “This is another example of local options to help homeowners who are aging in place or who are burdened by changing tax increases to request for government support. Homeowners who purchased a new home last year or who at least 65 years old as of January 1 are especially urged to complete their homestead exemption applications. All Fulton County property owners who are at least 65 years old can benefit from a senior exemption regardless of their income.”

Fulton County homeowners have until April 1 to apply for a homestead exemption and receive a discount on their city, county and school property taxes. To qualify for a 2022 homestead exemption, the homeowner must have been listed on the deed and have lived in the home as of January 1, 2022. Homeowners with a current homestead exemption in place do not need to reapply for a basic homestead exemption unless there is a change made to their property deed, such as changes regarding a divorce, inheritance or refinancing. Other senior homestead exemptions are offered for seniors who meet certain income requirements.

To apply for a homestead exemption and to learn more about the process, homeowners may visit any office of the Fulton County Board of Assessors or apply online at www.fultonassessor.org.
