Rep. Cox to Introduce Medicaid Tax Credit Legislation

ATLANTA – State Representative Clay Cox (R-Lilburn) today announced his plans to introduce legislation during the 2018 legislative session of the Georgia General Assembly that would create a tax credit for employers who provide health coverage to Medicaid eligible employees.

“While serving on the Board of Community Health, I noticed that the state put a lot of energy in recruiting Georgians to enroll in Medicaid, but we did very little to get people off of it,” said Rep. Cox. “This measure would reward employers that hire and provide health coverage to Medicaid recipients, thus reducing the number of Georgians on Medicaid, saving taxpayers’ money and encouraging job growth throughout our state.”

This legislation would provide employers with an income tax credit for up to three years for each Medicaid eligible employee who participates in the employer’s health benefit plan. The tax credit would be $5,000 for the first year and $2,500 for the second and third years per employee who meets Medicaid’s eligibility requirements and participates in the employer’s health benefit plan.

This legislation will be formally introduced during the 2018 legislative session of the Georgia General Assembly, which begins on January 8, 2018.

Representative Clay Cox represents the citizens of District 108, which includes portions of Gwinnett County. He was first elected into the House of Representatives in 2004 and again in 2016, and currently serves on the Energy, Utilities & Telecommunication, Juvenile Justice, and Transportation committees.
