ATLANTA – House Speaker David Ralston (R-Blue Ridge) announced the appointment of State Representative Dale Rutledge (R-McDonough) to the House Study Committee on For-Hire Transportation Services. The five-member committee will review emerging business models in for-hire transportation services and evaluate existing state law’s effectiveness for these types of businesses.
“Technology is constantly changing the way we conduct business across all government and business sectors. Companies like Uber and Lyft have developed very innovative business models which are rapidly growing in popularity across the country,” said Rep. Rutledge. “Here in Georgia, my hope is that we can encourage the growth of this service while balancing the public safety, insurance liability, and tax issues that have been raised. Our goal is to continually find ways to eliminate hurdles created by burdensome regulations, thereby allowing business to grow.”
The House Study Committee on For-Hire Transportation Services, created by House Resolution 1805, is charged with reviewing traditional and innovative business models of for-hire transportation services. The committee will determine the best methods for ensuring public safety, preventing illegal practices and collecting sales and use taxes in the new market of transportation service companies.
