ATLANTA – State Representative Darlene Taylor (R-Thomasville), chairwoman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Health, was recently named by House Speaker Jon Burns (R-Newington) to serve as co-chair of the House Study Committee on Reinsurance for Essential Industries.
“I am grateful to have been selected to serve as co-chair of this study committee, with the goal of reducing the costs of property and casualty reinsurance markets,” said Rep. Taylor. “Commercial property and casualty insurance brokers have reported quarterly price increases at an average of six percent, and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners recently stated that rising claims costs have been associated with the increased frequency of severe storms. This financial burden is being passed down to local businesses who are forced to choose between inadequate protection and unaffordable policies. This study committee is essential in determining solutions to stabilize costs and ensure adequate coverage.”
Created by House Resolution 40, this study committee will study the cost of the property and casualty reinsurance market and conditions necessary for public-private partnerships in Georgia’s commercial property and casualty reinsurance market.
Speaker Burns also appointed the following study committee members: Co-Chair Noel Williams (R-Cordele), State Representatives Demetrius Douglas (D-Stockbridge), Minority Leader Carolyn Hugley (D-Columbus) and Matthew Gambill (R-Cartersville).
Representative Darlene Taylor represents the citizens of District 173, which includes portions of Grady and Thomas counties. She was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2010 and currently serves as the Chair of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Health. She also serves on the Agriculture & Consumer Affairs, Insurance, Public & Community Health, Reapportionment and Redistricting, Rules and Transportation committees, as well as the Special Committee on Healthcare.
