Rep. Dar’shun Kendrick Introduces Legislation Relating to Indictments by Grand Jury and the Protection of Grand Jurors

ATLANTA – State Representative Dar’shun Kendrick (D-Lithonia) recently introduced House Bill 1137, legislation relating to Georgia’s indictment by grand jury process.

“Safeguarding the anonymity of Georgia’s grand jurors is essential in guaranteeing their safety and security, especially when serving on high-profile cases,” said Rep. Kendrick. “We must recognize the vital role grand jurors play in Georgia’s justice system, and I look forward to partnering with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to pass this necessary measure.”

House Bill 1137 relates to current forms of indictment by a Georgia grand jury and would prohibit the disclosure of grand juror names on an official indictment. Specifically, HB 1137 would amend current law to include every indictment of a grand jury in which the nature of the offense charged may be easily understood by the jury would be deemed sufficiently technical and correct. Additionally, HB 1137 would require each indictment by a Georgia grand jury to be formatted in a manner that is consistent regardless of the nature of the offense.

HB 1137 has been assigned to the House Judiciary Non-Civil Committee.
