ATLANTA – State Representative Debra Bazemore (D-Riverdale) commends the passage of House Bill 179 by the Georgia House of Representatives on Wednesday, February 24, 2021. HB 179 incorporates legislation introduced by Rep. Bazemore to create a specialty license plate supporting the fight against cancer.
“I commend my colleagues in the House for recognizing the importance of funding opportunities that come from Georgia’s specialty license plates,” said Rep. Bazemore. “This bill was very personal to me since I am a colon cancer survivor and was unable to purchase a cancer license plate because the current license plates are cancer specific, but this one is all inclusive. In addition, a portion of the proceeds will go to the Center for Oncology Research & Education that will advance cancer care through partnerships and innovation.”
Rep. Bazmore has worked over the last several years to pass legislation that would afford everyone an opportunity to purchase a license plate that supports various cancer research and programs. During the 2021 session, Rep. Bazemore introduced House Bill 50, which would create a specialty license plate supporting the fight against cancer. Rep. Bazemore’s bill was incorporated into HB 179 to also allow Georgians to join the fight against cancer regardless of what type of cancer one has experienced.
Additionally, HB 179 would update the design for an existing license plate supporting breast cancer related programs, and another to support members of the armed forces.
