ATLANTA – State Representative Demetrius Douglas (D-Stockbridge) was recently appointed by House Speaker Jon Burns (R-Newington) to serve on the Georgia High School Athletics Overview Committee.
“I sincerely appreciate Speaker Burns for appointing me to serve on the High School Athletics Overview Committee to study high school athletics,” said Rep. Douglas. “As a former athlete, I understand how sports play a vital role in a student’s educational journey, fostering teamwork, discipline and a sense of belonging. By strengthening high school athletics, we can create more opportunities for young learners to grow, both on and off the field. I look forward to working with members of the committee to advance our efforts to support high school athletics in our great state.”
Pursuant to Senate Bill 288, which was signed into law by former Governor Nathan Deal in 2014, the High School Athletics Overview Committee is a joint committee composed of members from the Georgia House of Representatives and Georgia State Senate who are tasked with the responsibility of evaluating the performance of high school athletic associations for fairness and equity in establishing and implementing certain standards and promoting academic achievement and good sportsmanship.
Representative Demetrius Douglas represents the citizens of District 78, which includes portions of Clayton and Henry counties. He was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2012 and currently serves on the Banks & Banking, Health, Insurance, Intragovernmental Coordination and Motor Vehicles committees.
