Rep. Demetrius Douglas Appointed to the Georgia Council on Literacy

ATLANTA – State Representative Demetrius Douglas (D-Stockbridge) was recently appointed by House Speaker Jon Burns (R-Newington) to serve on the Georgia Council on Literacy.

“I want to thank Speaker Burns for appointing me to serve on the Georgia Council on Literacy,” said Rep. Douglas. “Improving literacy is essential to giving all Georgia students the tools they need to succeed. I look forward to working with my colleagues to find practical solutions that will help increase literacy rates across our state. Together, we can make a real difference in helping more students build the skills they need for a better future.”

Senate Bill 211, passed during the 2023 legislative session and signed into law by Governor Brian Kemp, established the Georgia Council on Literacy. This 30-member council, appointed by the Lieutenant Governor and Speaker of the House, is tasked with overseeing the implementation of the science of reading instruction in every public school across Georgia.

Rep. Douglas will serve a term on the Georgia Council on Literacy that runs concurrently with his tenure in the Georgia House of Representatives.

Representative Demetrius Douglas represents the citizens of District 78, which includes portions of Clayton and Henry counties. He was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2012 and currently serves on the Banks & Banking, Health, Insurance, Intragovernmental Coordination and Motor Vehicles committees.
