“It was a pleasure spending the day with the children from Alto Park Elementary,” said Rep. Dempsey. “They all seemed very excited to visit the Gold Dome and eager to learn about our state’s history.”

During the capitol visit, Rep. Dempsey led the students onto the House floor and explained the legislative process. She also showed the children the reproduction of the portrait of Rome’s own Ellen Axson Wilson, wife of President Woodrow Wilson.

In addition to their trip to the state capitol, the Alto Park Elementary students also toured the Governor’s Mansion, where they were greeted by First Lady Sandra Deal. During her time with the school group, Georgia’s First Lady answered the children’s questions and told stories about the mansion and Georgia history.

Each year the fifth grade class from Alto Park Elementary School makes this trip to Atlanta, which provides the students with an opportunity to see first hand the locations they learned about throughout the year. The annual field trip is led by Ms. Gail Pitts, a 5th grade teacher who also helps organized fundraisers that fully fund the cost of the trip.

Representative Katie Dempsey represents the citizens of District 13, which includes portions of Floyd County. She was elected into the House of Representatives in 2006, and currently serves as the Chair of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Human Resources and Vice Chairman for the Higher Education Committee. She also serves as a member of the Economic Development and Tourism; Energy, Utilities, and Telecommunications; Health and Human Services; Rules committees.
