ATLANTA— State Representative Donna Sheldon (R-Dacula), chair of the Transit Governance Study Commission, today released the following statement regarding the Regional Transit Committee’s proposed legislation that would create a regional transit system in metro Atlanta:
“I commend the work that the ARC and RTC put into this conceptual legislation. However, the creation of a single, unified, regional transit governance authority is a major undertaking and it should not be rushed into. While this issue needs to be addressed quickly, it must also be done carefully and cautiously. It would be premature for either the Transit Governance Study Commission or the General Assembly to move forward with the RTC’s proposal until it has been thoroughly vetted. I look forward to working with the other members of the Transit Governance Study Commission during the interim, as we study this proposal and work toward bringing the area’s various transit systems together under one effective governance authority.”
Earlier this year, the Atlanta Regional Commission’s (ARC) Regional Transit Committee (RTC) submitted conceptual legislation to the General Assembly that would provide guidelines and principles for creating an umbrella governance structure for a metro-wide, coordinated regional transit system in Atlanta.
Representative Donna Sheldon represents the citizens of District 105, which includes portions of Gwinnett County.
