Rep. Doreen Carter Recognizes Bass Reeves Gun Club at State Capitol

ATLANTA – State Representative Doreen Carter (D-Lithonia) today recognized the Bass Reeves Gun Club (BRGC) in honor of its 10th anniversary on the House Floor of the State Capitol.

“My support for the Bass Reeves Gun Club stems from a belief that firearm ownership should come with a commitment to safety, education and sensible policies,” said Rep. Carter. “Rather than focusing solely on the right to own a gun, we need to prioritize responsible training, secure storage and policies that keep our communities safe. BRGC exemplifies this by not only educating gun owners but also fostering a culture of accountability and awareness.”

The Bass Reeves Gun Club, a 501(c)(3) organization based in the Atlanta Metro area, seeks to promote safe and responsible use of firearms for home protection, competitive shooting and outdoor recreational activities. As a pro-Second Amendment organization, BRGC aims to preserve community safety through armed protection and education, while welcoming individuals from all religious, social and racial backgrounds.

Over the past seven years, the club seeks to promote firearm education through its Ladies Day Out events. These sessions have trained more than 1,500 women in firearm safety and marksmanship fundamentals, with the goal of creating a supportive environment for women to explore firearm ownership and training.

Additionally, the club provides quarterly, no-cost training to young people ages 8-18 through the Youth Firearms Education Program. With nearly 100 youth and guardians trained, the club has also distributed more than 1,000 gunlocks in partnership with Project Child Safe. Another key initiative, the Protect What Protects You campaign, a collaboration between the National African American Gun Association (NAAGA) and the Firearms Security Alliance, has educated gun owners on firearm security to prevent theft-related crimes.

In 2025, BRGC’s Aiming for College Excellence Scholarship will award $2,000 to eligible college freshmen and rising sophomores, adding to the $16,000 in scholarships previously distributed to community youth.

In 2020, Rep. Carter also introduced a resolution to acknowledge NAAGA and BRGC’s contributions to community safety and education.

Representative Doreen Carter represents the citizens of District 93, which includes portions of DeKalb, Gwinnett and Rockdale counties. She was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2015 and currently serves on the Agriculture & Consumer Affairs, Code Revision, Economic Development & Tourism, Education and Small Business Development committees.
