Rep. Drenner Denounces House Passage of Campus Carry Legislation

ATLANTA – State Representative Karla Drenner (D-Avondale Estates) today issued a statement denouncing the passage of House Bill 280 by the Georgia House of Representatives on Friday, March 3, 2017. HB 280 would allow weapons carry license holders to carry and possess handguns in certain buildings on Georgia’s public college and university campuses.

“After the passage of House Bill 280 by the House of Representatives, I am greatly concerned about the safety of my two college-aged children and their friends, professors and administrators, as well as the safety of Georgia’s university students statewide,” said Rep. Drenner. “Guns will not make my children or any college student feel any safer on college campuses. If we want to make a true difference in the safety of Georgia’s universities, the General Assembly must study campus crime and craft measures and methods to combat criminal activity and make everyone feel safe. We cannot solve the problem of campus safety by arming our children. Rather, we must arm them with awareness and good sense.”

House Bill 280 would allow for the concealed carry of handguns by Georgia weapons carry license holders in while in or on certain buildings or real property owned by or leased to any public technical school, vocational school, college, university, or other institution of postsecondary education. However, the bill would restrict weapons carry license holders from carrying or possessing handguns in buildings or on property used for athletic sporting events, student housing, including fraternity and sorority houses, and on-campus preschools.

House Bill 280 will now go to the Senate for consideration.
