ATLANTA – State Representative Emory Dunahoo (R-Gainesville) recently filed House Bill 1141, the Georgia Fair Tax Act, legislation which would amend Georgia’s tax code to convert from a state income tax to a statewide consumption based tax system.
“Our tax system is complex and taxes hardworking Georgia citizens the most,” said Rep. Dunahoo. “Under the Georgia Fair Tax Act, Georgians would no longer be taxed on their income, but only on items they and their families consume. By eliminating state income taxes and allowing Georgians to keep more of each paycheck, we are providing a better quality of life for our citizens, in addition to creating a more simplified tax system.”
The Georgia Fair Tax Act would reform the state tax code by replacing all state personal and business income taxes with a single consumption tax. The consumption tax would be a flat tax of 5.5% for all individuals in every tax bracket. The bill would also allow for monthly tax rebates, or “prebates,” to eligible families up to the poverty level.
