ATLANTA – State Representative Erica Thomas (D-Austell) today announced that the Georgia Senate has given final passage to House Bill 839, legislation which would create a ballot referendum for area residents to consider incorporating the City of Mableton.
“I want to thank my Senate counterparts for showing their bipartisan support of this resident-led cityhood effort,” said Rep. Thomas. “Knowing how close this community is, it is no surprise to me that residents already believe that Mableton is a city. I am proud to announce that residents are one step closer to establishing a local government for themselves.”
If HB 839 is signed into law, local residents would have the opportunity to vote on incorporating the city through a special election no later than November 2022.
According to a feasibility study conducted by the University of Georgia’s Carl Vinson Institute of Government, the proposed city of Mableton would not have to raise taxes to operate.
The city’s charter would provide waste management, economic and community development programs, planning and zoning, as well as parks and recreation services.

Representative Erica Thomas represents the citizens of District 39, which includes portions of Cobb County. She was elected to the House of Representatives in 2014 and currently serves as House Minority Caucus Vice Chairman.
