Rep. Erick Allen’s Legislation to Protect Health Care Access to Receive Subcommittee Hearing Tomorrow

ATLANTA – State Representative Erick Allen (D-Smyrna) will present House Bill 1003, legislation which seeks to prevent long-term contract disputes between insurance providers and Georgia health care systems, during the House Insurance Subcommittee on Life & Health meeting TOMORROW, Wednesday, February 9, 2022, at 9 a.m. in room 606 of the Coverdell Legislative Office Building (18 Capitol Square SW) in Atlanta. “This legislation is all about protecting Georgia families from unnecessary contract disputes brought on by insurance carriers,” said Rep. Allen. “Access to quality, affordable health care is vital to the well-being and prosperity of Georgians, and this bill is another step in the fight for that access. Patients trust us to hold insurance providers to their word, and this bill keeps providers from early expiration or forcing renegotiation of contracts at the expense of patients. Making sure quality, affordable health care is accessible to all Georgians isn’t just about Medicaid expansion, it’s about a comprehensive approach to a healthy Georgia. This legislation is another avenue to stand up for Georgians in the fight for health care.”

House Bill 1003 would prohibit the state from entering into or renewing a contract with a health insurance provider if the insurer has either terminated early without cause or forced a renegotiation of an unexpired contract with a Georgia-based hospital or healthcare system within the prior 24 months.
