ATLANTA – State Representative Floyd Griffin (D-Milledgeville) issues the following statement in response to the recent proposal to cut jobs at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA):
“I stand in staunch opposition to the current administration’s attack on U.S. veterans. The recent announcement of plans to cut 80,000 jobs from the VA sparks concerns from veterans and Americans from all sides of the aisle. As a retired senior combat officer, I know firsthand the challenges veterans face when we get home. The VA already faces problems, and veterans are often left without access to the care and benefits they are owed. By cutting VA funding and jobs, the current government makes it clear where they stand in respect to the men and women who have died for our country. This blatant disrespect for veterans has received backlash from both parties – so why don’t they take action to bolster funding and return benefits to our most vulnerable, instead? Americans do not disagree with less government funding, but we must disagree when their actions cost the livelihood and health of Americans who have come home from war and faced the unimaginable aftermath of trauma and injury. Rather than further divide the country, our federal government could take steps toward better supporting critical programs, bringing Americans back together on common ground. U.S. Secretary Doug Collins should carefully consider and evaluate these changes before acting on them, ensuring that any decisions made prioritize the well-being of those who have served and sacrificed for our nation.”
Representative Floyd Griffin represents the citizens of District 149, which includes portions of Baldwin, Bibb and Jones counties. He was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2024 and currently serves on the Defense & Veterans Affairs, Special Rules and State Planning & Community Affairs committees.
