Rep. Gabriel Sanchez Introduces House Bill 1188 to Protect Renters from Hidden Fees

ATLANTA – State Representative Gabriel Sanchez (D-Smyrna) recently introduced House Bill 1188, legislation aimed at promoting transparency and fairness in residential rent pricing.

“Georgia is one of the worst states to be a renter, and hidden fees only deepen housing insecurity for working class people,” said Rep. Sanchez. “At a time when families are stretched thin by rising housing costs, this bill stands up for working class people and renters by ensuring landlords disclose the full cost of a home and prohibiting fees that are not clearly stated in leasing agreements or that impose excessive or unjustified costs on tenants. By requiring honest pricing and curbing unfair charges, this legislation helps shift the balance of power back toward tenants and working families, where it belongs.”

HB 1188 would prohibit landlords from withholding the full rental price of a property and from charging hidden fees. Rep. Sanchez adds that this measure will help ensure that renters can make informed decisions and avoid surprise charges.
