Rep. Gilliard to Serve as Keynote Speaker at Virtual Savannah NAACP General Meeting

ATLANTA – State Representative Carl Gilliard (D-Garden City) will serve as the keynote speaker at the Savannah NAACP’s virtual general meeting on Sunday, April 25, 2021. At the meeting, Rep. Gilliard’s remarks will focus on his message, “We’ve got work to do.”

“I look forward to joining our local NAACP chapter to inform African American residents about recent legislation and other current events that will directly impact them here in Savannah,” said Rep. Gilliard. “The General Assembly passed several bills that affect Chatham County residents, including my legislation to establish a building authority for our county, as well as a county commission that will seek to find solutions that prevent and intervene in gang involvement in our communities. Georgia will also begin its reapportionment process very soon, which will impact state and federal representation for African American Georgians.”

Rep. Gilliard will discuss local legislation that was recently signed into law, including House Bill 749, which creates the Chatham County Building and Facilities Authority, as well as House Bill 750, which creates the Chatham County Legislative Gang Prevention and Intervention Commission. Rep. Gilliard will also discuss House Resolution 161, which he recently introduced to study non-stop transportation from Savannah to Atlanta. If this resolution is adopted during the 2022 legislative session, it would establish the House Study Committee on a Nancy Hanks Passenger Rail Line. Finally, Rep. Gilliard will address Georgia’s upcoming reapportionment process and how it may impact African American Georgians.
