ATLANTA – The Georgia House of Representatives gave final passage last week to House Bill 959, which included the “Educating Children of Military Families Act,” sponsored by Rep. Mike Glanton (D-Jonesboro).
“I’m thrilled that the Educating Children of Military Families Act was able to receive a final vote and passage in the General Assembly,” said Rep. Glanton. “Georgia has the fifth largest military population in the nation, and I believe the children of our active duty military should be recognized and watched out for, especially at younger ages. Thank you to my colleagues for understanding the importance of this legislation.”
The bill would allow the Department of Education to establish a unique identifier for each student whose parent or guardian is an active duty military service member in the armed forces of the United States or whose parent is a reserve member of the armed forces of the United States or the National Guard. This would allow for the analyzing and sharing of data related to the educational achievement and progress of students from military families to better address the particular needs of these students. HB 959 was amended and contained language from Rep. Glanton’s House Bill 814, the “Educating Children of Military Families Act.”
HB 959 will now go to Governor Nathan Deal for consideration.
