Rep. Greene Announces the Passage of the Amended Budget to Address Impacts of Hurricane Michael

ATLANTA – State Representative Gerald Greene (R-Cuthbert) and the Georgia House of Representatives yesterday passed an amended fiscal year 2019 budget during the special session of the Georgia General Assembly. The Georgia General Assembly began a special legislative session on Tuesday, November 13, 2018, which was ordered by Gov. Deal to provide emergency funding to state agencies and local governments following Hurricane Michael.

“I am incredibly grateful to Governor Deal and House leadership for identifying the critical needs in Southwest Georgia and calling a special legislative session to amend the state budget to aide in our recovery efforts,” said Rep. Greene. “The devastation from Hurricane Michael is unlike anything our state has ever seen, and this is arguably one of the most crucial pieces of legislation that we have passed during my tenure in the General Assembly. I am proud to represent my district through this heartbreaking time but am certain that our citizens will see the benefits from the General Assembly’s efforts during this special session.”

The amended fiscal year 2019 budget appropriates $270 million to aide those areas affected by the storm throughout Southwest Georgia. Southwest Georgia experienced approximately $2.5 billion in losses to Georgia’s agriculture and timber industries as a result of Hurricane Michael.

The amended budget will now go to the Senate for consideration.
