ATLANTA – State Representative Keith Heard (D-Athens) commented today on the passage of House Bill 29 out of the House Ways & Means Committee. This legislation would create a one-time tax amnesty program.
“Other states have had great success by implementing a tax amnesty program,” said Rep. Heard. “This is an opportunity for us to gain additional revenue by collecting unpaid taxes.”
HB 29 provides a penalty waiver for all tax payers who voluntarily pay back taxes with interest owed between January 1991 and December 2010. This amnesty program would be available only from October 2012 to December 2012. A similar tax amnesty program was offered in 1992, which brought in an estimated $50 million. The tax amnesty program that would be offered through HB 29 is expected to bring in an estimated $80-180 million.
