ATLANTA – State Representative Howard Maxwell (R-Dallas) was recently appointed to serve on the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) Labor and Economic Development Committee by House Speaker David Ralston (R-Blue Ridge).
“I am excited by the opportunity given to me by the Speaker to serve on this important national committee,” said Rep. Maxwell. “It is an honor for me to represent District 17 and the Georgia House of Representatives by serving on this committee.”
The Labor and Economic Development Committee is one of NCSL’s 12 standing committees. These standing committees serve an important role in representing state interests in Washington, D.C. and in facilitating policy innovation among the state and territorial legislatures. The committees also provide a unique forum for the discussion of major issues facing the states, which allows legislators to learn from the experiences of other states.
According to NCSL, the Labor and Economic Development Committee covers state and federal issues related to labor, employment, workforce and economic development, international trade and cultural affairs. The committee educates Congress and federal agencies about state concerns related to federal actions that impact the states, based on policy positions adopted by the states through NCSL’s policy process. In addition, the Committee serves as a forum for legislators and legislative staff to learn about and share information about policy options being considered in states.
The appointment is for a two-year term concurrent with Rep. Maxwell’s service as a member of the Georgia House of Representatives.
NCSL is a bipartisan organization that serves legislators and staffs from the nation’s 50 states. It provides research, technical assistance and opportunities for policymakers to exchange ideas on the most pressing state issues. It also advocates for the interests of the states in the American federal system.
