ATLANTA – House Speaker Pro-Tempore Jan Jones (R-Milton) today was elected by her colleagues in the Georgia House of Representatives to continue her service as the House Speaker Pro-Tempore for the 2023-2024 legislative term.
“I want to thank my colleagues in the Georgia House of Representatives for continuing to put their confidence and trust in me for another legislative term,” said Speaker Pro-Tempore Jones. “The state of Georgia succeeds when its elected officials place good policy above politics. With Speaker Jon Burns at the helm, the Republican leadership team will continue to navigate the House towards sound, conservative policies that make a real difference for real Georgians across the state.”
Speaker Pro-Tempore Jones was first elected to her current position in 2010. Following the death of Speaker David Ralston in November 2022, Speaker Pro Tempore Jan Jones became the 74th Speaker of the House for the remainder of the 2021-2022 legislative term, making her the first female Speaker of the House in state history. Ahead of the 2023 legislative session, she was nominated by her Republican colleagues to resume her role as Speaker Pro-Tempore for the new term.
The Speaker Pro-Tempore of the House serves as the presiding officer in the absence of the Speaker of the House, which includes enforcing the rules of the House and calling matters before the House for debate.
Representative Jan Jones represents the citizens of District 47, which includes portions of Cherokee and Fulton counties. She was elected to the House of Representatives in 2002 and currently serves as House Speaker Pro-Tempore.
