ATLANTA – State Representative Rick Jasperse (R-Jasper), Chairman of the House Study Committee on School Security, today announced that he will participate in the Federal Commission on School Safety’s Final Listening Session on Tuesday, August 28, 2018 in Montgomery, Alabama. During the meeting, members of the public, along with representatives of local and state governments, will share their views on how to keep students and schools safe.
“I am honored to participate in the listening session,” said Rep. Jasperse. “Nothing is more important to parents than keeping our children safe. By sharing school safety ideas, we can find ways to improve security on our campuses.”
Representatives from the Federal Commission on School Safety (FCSS) will travel to Montgomery, Alabama, on Tuesday, August 28, for their fourth and final planned listening session. Listening sessions also took place over the last several months in Lexington, Kentucky, Washington, D.C. and Cheyenne, Wyoming.
The listening session will be divided into three sessions – sessions one and two will be roundtable discussions between representatives of state and local government agencies, as well as Commission representatives, and session three will be for members of the general public to express their views on how to improve school safety.
The Commission was created in March by President Donald Trump in the wake of the tragic shooting deaths of 17 students and staff at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., on Feb. 14. The Commission has been charged with quickly providing meaningful and actionable recommendations and best practices to keep students safe at school.
Education Secretary Betsy DeVos serves as chair of the Commission, and other members include U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar, and Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen.
Representative Rick Jasperse represents the citizens of District 11, which includes portions of Gordon, Murray, and all of Pickens County. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 2010 and currently serves as Chairman of the Higher Education Committee. He also serves on the Appropriations Subcommittee on Higher Education and the Agriculture & Consumer Affairs, Health & Human Services, Human Relations & Aging, and Public Safety & Homeland Security committees.
