ATLANTA – State Representative Jimmy Pruett (R-Eastman) was honored with the “Outstanding Georgia Citizen” certificate by Secretary of State Brian Kemp on Thursday, June 17, 2010. The certificate was given to Rep. Pruett in recognition for his support of House Bill 665, which makes voting simpler and more reliable for overseas military personnel.
“As a former officer in the Georgia Army National Guard, I was honored to support legislation that will make it easier for Georgia’s military and overseas voters to ensure their ballots are received and counted,” said Rep. Pruett.
House Bill 665 establishes a pilot voting project that allows overseas and military voters to cast their ballots and have them received by local election officials in time to be counted. One method is to establish kiosks where voters cast their ballot. The ballot would then be transmitted to the Secretary of State’s office or the voter’s home county via a secure online network. Currently, Georgia’s overseas and military voters may only submit their absentee ballots by mail.
“I knew I could count on Rep. Jimmy Pruett to help us enact legislation this year that will increase opportunities for Georgia’s 200,000 military and overseas voters to participate in our elections,” said Secretary Kemp. “Due to his invaluable assistance and leadership in increasing voting opportunities for our military and overseas voters, and ensuring a fair and secure elections process for all Georgians, it is my honor as Secretary of State to present State Representative Jimmy Pruett with the Outstanding Georgia Citizen certificate.”
