ATLANTA – State Representative Karen Bennett (D-Stone Mountain) recently welcomed approximately 50 members of the Sikh community to the State Capitol. The visit was part of Sikh Awareness and Legislative Day, which was established by Rep. Bennett with House Resolution 1507.
“Sikh Americans are part of the fabric of America and certainly the fabric of Georgia,” said Rep. Bennett. “Sikhs have made notable accomplishments as farmers, entrepreneurs, congressmen, scientists and more. It was a pleasure to recognize their contributions to this great state and nation.”
Sikhism is a religion founded in the Punjab region of South Asia in 1469. It is the fifth largest world religion. Introduced to the United States in the 19th Century, there are currently more than 500,000 Sikhs in the United States. Georgia is the home of an estimated 5,000 practicing Sikh families.
