ATLANTA – State Representative Kim Schofield (D-Atlanta) recently co-sponsored House Bill 87, which would require health benefit policy coverage for medically necessary orthotic and prosthetic devices. The proposed legislation aims to empower individuals with disabilities and improve their quality of life.
“This legislation is life-transforming,” said Rep. Schofield. “It is about empowering individuals with disabilities, ensuring they have the tools they need to thrive and improving their overall quality of life. No one should have to struggle to afford the medical devices they need to work, move and live with dignity. As Georgia moves toward a more inclusive and equitable healthcare landscape, this bill represents a significant milestone in ensuring that all residents, regardless of physical ability, have access to the resources they need to lead independent and fulfilling lives.”
The legislation would mandate insurance coverage for prosthetic and orthotic devices deemed medically necessary by treating physicians. HB 87 is a result of collaborative efforts with the Georgia Society of Orthotists and Prosthetists, including the “So Every Body Can Move” initiative. The bill outlines specific requirements for coverage, including provisions for customization, training and ongoing support for individuals utilizing these devices.
