ATLANTA – State Representative Lee Hawkins (R-Gainesville), chairman of the House Health Committee, was recently named by House Speaker Jon Burns (R-Newington) to serve as the chairman of the House Study Committee on Cancer Care Access.
“I am grateful to the House and Speaker Burns for continuing to prioritize health care for Georgians in rural parts of the state,” said Chairman Hawkins. “This study committee will investigate the barriers that citizens in rural parts of the state experience when trying to access quality cancer care. We will take a comprehensive look at how to improve early detection, expand screening efforts and invest in the medical workforce. From exploring the economic impact of cancer care centers and working to strengthen medical education, my colleagues and I will be committed to ensuring that every Georgian has access to timely, effective and equitable cancer treatment.”
Created by House Resolution 72, this study committee will study the lack of access to quality cancer care and the need to evaluate and make recommendations for such care.
Speaker Burns also appointed the following study committee members: State Representatives Gerald Greene (R-Cuthbert), Karen Mathiak (R-Griffin), Deborah Silcox (R-Sandy Springs) and Jasmine Clark (D-Lilburn). Dr. Jorge Cortes, Dr. Suresh Ramalingam, Dr. Chris Kiker, Kristin Higgins and Jennie Wren Denmark will serve as non-legislative members.
Representative Lee Hawkins represents the citizens of District 27, which includes portions of Hall and Lumpkin counties. He was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2012 and currently serves as Chairman of the Health Committee. He also serves on the Appropriations Subcommittee on Health, Banks & Banking, Human Relations & Aging, Insurance, Regulated Industries and Rules committees, as well as the Special Committee on Healthcare. He also serves as an Ex-Officio member of the Public and Community Health Committee.
