ATLANTA – State Representative Mandisha A. Thomas (D-South Fulton) will host Environmental Justice Day TOMORROW, Tuesday, March 21, 2023, from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. starting at the South Wing Steps of the Georgia State Capitol. This event will feature guest speakers, an award ceremony, as well as an opportunity to interact with state legislators and watch the legislative session.
“You really cannot speak about Georgia’s natural environment without speaking about agriculture,” said Rep. Thomas. “With agriculture as Georgia’s number one industry, it is pertinent that our water and soil is adequate to grow our produce, feed our livestock and ingest into our bodies. Our natural resources sustain our economy and feed the minds, souls and bodies of Georgians.”
During this event, Daniel Blackmon will present the Environmental Justice Vanguard Award in honor of the late State Representative Tish Naghise (D-Fayetteville). Participants will have an opportunity to take a group photo, observe the legislative session in the public House gallery and have lunch. This event will feature presentations and remarks from several organizations and state legislators.
Rep. Thomas will co-host Environmental Justice Day with Black Voters Matter, Georgia Interfaith Power & Light, Mi Familia Vota, Environment Georgia, Clean Energy Atlanta, Women’s Action New Directions (WAND) and Pro Georgia.
Rep. Thomas will be joined by State Senators Nan Orrock (D-Atlanta) and Donzella James (D-Atlanta); State Representatives Karla Drenner (D-Avondale Estates), Kim Schofield (D-Atlanta), Lydia Glaize (D-Fairburn), Debbie Buckner (D-Junction City), Mesha Mainor (D-Atlanta) and Becky Evans (D-Atlanta).
The following individuals have been invited to speak during the event: Chris Manganiello, Chattahoochee River Keepers; Wan R. Smith, Georgia Conservation Voters; Kim Scott, Georgia WAND; Rich Johnson, Fulton County Commission on the Environment; Wanda Mosley, Black Voters Matter Fund; and Nina Mosherfi, MTO Shahmaghsoudi.
