Rep. Mandisha Thomas Welcomes Grammy-Nominated Singer-Songwriter Jekalyn Carr as Chaplain of the Day for Georgia House of Representatives

ATLANTA – State Representative Mandisha Thomas (D-South Fulton) welcomed Minister Reverend Jekalyn Carr as she served as the “Chaplain of the Day” for the Georgia House of Representatives on Thursday, February 8, 2024.

“It was an honor to introduce the talented Jekalyn Carr, who since the age of thirteen, has combined her gift of singing with her ministry work,” said Rep. Thomas. “Minister Carr has continued to uplift and empower countless individuals worldwide during times of hardships. Her ministry resonates deeply with the people whom we as legislators advocate for in this very Chamber through policy and budget decisions.”

At a young age, Jekalyn Carr earned a top five gospel album, with the guidance of her father Alan Carr. She was awarded her first Stellar Gospel Music Award at the age of 16 and received her first Grammy award nomination at the age of 18. Since then, she has won four Dove Awards, six Stellar Awards, five Grammy nominations and numerous other industry nominations.

Jekalyn Carr is more than a preacher, singer and songwriter. She is also a published author, actress, radio personality, serial entrepreneur, conference host and fashion and fragrance innovator. Minister Carr received the President’s Award in recognition of her work. She was also presented with a key to the City of Fulton County in Georgia, at the age of 25, after being the first gospel artist and songwriter to be inducted into the Women’s Songwriters Hall of Fame in Washington, D.C.

Carr’s sermon in the House Chamber marked the start of Legislative Day 17.
