ATLANTA – State Representative Mary Margaret Oliver (D-Decatur) today pre-filed House Bill 711, legislation for the 2016 legislative session, which addresses the issue of pension obligations owed to county employees by citizens of newly formed cities.
“HB 711 will solve a basic unfairness that presently exists for pension obligations to county employees for citizens of newly created cities,” said Rep. Oliver. “There is some complicated math required to set this financial obligation, and I invite others to help define the correct formula so citizens can know what they owe, and county employees can be protected. This is an important budget issue for local governments.”
Under HB 711, residents in cities that are formed after July 1, 2016 will be obligated to pay employee pension obligations for those previously supported in the formerly unincorporated area. HB 711 includes proposed calculations for determining pension obligations for local governments in such situations.
HB 711 will be formally introduced with the 2016 legislative session of the Georgia General Assembly convenes in January.
