ATLANTA – State Representative Matt Reeves (R-Duluth), the House sponsor of Senate Bill 99, the Law Enforcement Partners Act, applauded the Georgia State Senate for approving SB 99 on Legislative Day 40 of the 2025 legislative session, also known as Sine Die. State Senator Randy Robertson (R-Cataula) sponsored the bill in the Senate.
“When fighting drug dealers or managing a disaster, our state and local law enforcement, should have clear legal authority to partner with federal law enforcement and, the Law Enforcement Partners Act will keep Georgians safe from dangerous criminals and during emergencies such as during a hurricane or the tragedy in the streets of New Orleans on January 1,” said Rep. Reeves.
The Law Enforcement Partners Act would restore the law enforcement jurisdictional basis for state and local law enforcement officials in Georgia to request assistance from federal law enforcement in cases of disaster management and joint task forces. Joint task forces often investigate human trafficking, gang activity, drug dealers and other dangerous criminal activities.
Prior to the final passage of SB 99, Georgia and Nebraska were the only two states without a statute providing jurisdiction for state and local law enforcement to request federal law enforcement assistance. Georgia inadvertently repealed that statutory basis when the citizen’s arrest law was repealed in 2020, and SB 99 would restore law enforcement jurisdiction that previously existed.
