Rep. Mitchell Introduces House Resolution 16

ATLANTA – State Representative Billy Mitchell (D-Stone Mountain) today introduced House Resolution 16, which ratifies a proposed equal rights amendment to the United States Constitution.

“The fight for the ERA should have concluded in the 70s when it was first introduced, but unfortunately, it still continues on today. The events of the past few years have brought a renewed spotlight to the second-class treatment of women in our society,” said Rep. Mitchell. “Passing this resolution would put the pressure on Congress to recognize the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment and put a close to what should have been a twentieth century issue.”

HR 16 is an equal rights amendment to the United States Constitution and would guarantee equal rights for all citizens regardless of sex.

This resolution has been adopted by 37 states. If adopted, Georgia would be the 38th state to ratify this proposed amendment to the United States Constitution, which would satisfy the two-thirds requirement to ratify this amendment to the United States Constitution.
