Rep. Paul Battles Appointed to Capitol Arts Standards Commission Monument Committee

ATLANTA — House Speaker David Ralston (R-Blue Ridge) recently announced the appointment of State Representative Paul Battles (R-Cartersville) to the Capitol Arts Standards Commission Monument Committee. The Capitol Arts Standards Commission Monument Committee was created as a part of House Bill 702, co-sponsored by Rep. Battles during the 2014 legislative session, which calls for the placement of a monument depicting the Ten Commandments, Preamble to the state Constitution, and a portion of the Declaration of Independence on the grounds of the State Capitol.

“I am honored to serve on this committee and execute our vision that we saw in House Bill 702,” said Rep. Battles. “Having a monument of the 10 Commandments, portions of The Declaration of Independence and the preamble to the Georgia Constitution on our Capitol grounds is an important part of our country and state’s history, and I hope this monument serves as a reminder of those principals for visitors at the State Capitol.”

The Capitol Arts Standards Commission Monument Committee will give final approval for the construction of the aforementioned monument. The monument will be designed, procured, and placed on the Capitol grounds by the Capitol Art Standards Commission.

House Bill 702 calls for a monument of the 10 Commandments, as well as portions of The Declaration of Independence and the preamble to the Georgia Constitution to be erected on the state Capitol grounds. HB 702 passed the House and the Senate during the 2014 legislative session and was signed into law by Governor Deal on April 29, 2014.
