ATLANTA – Speaker of the House David Ralston (R-Blue Ridge) recently appointed State Representative Penny Houston (R-Nashville) as the Chairman of the House Study Committee on Programs that Provide Services for the Reading to the Blind and the Visually Impaired.
“I am grateful that Speaker Ralston has appointed me to chair this study committee, as the work of this committee is not only important to the citizens of this state, but also very near to my heart,” said Rep. Houston. “I am thankful that my House colleagues saw the value in passing HR 979 this session, and I look forward to studying these programs and rehabilitation services to better serve the blind and visually impaired citizens of this state.”
The study committee will hold its first meeting Thursday, August 18, 2016 at 10 a.m. in room 606 in the Coverdell Legislative Office Building (CLOB) in Atlanta.
This study committee is created by House Resolution 979 and will study the programs and services for the reading to the blind and visually impaired. Other study committee members include Reps. Mike Cheokas (R-Americus), Terry Rogers (R-Clarkesville) and Jan Tankersley (R-Brooklet).

Representative Penny Houston represents the citizens of District 170, which includes all of Berrien and Cook counties and portions of Tift County. She was elected into the House of Representatives in 1997, and is currently the Chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Economic Development. She also serves on the Banks & Banking, Budget & Fiscal Affairs Oversight, Economic Development & Tourism, and Ways & Means committees.
