ATLANTA – State Representative Rhonda Burnough (D-Riverdale) will hold a dedication ceremony for the Gold Star Fathers of Georgia Highway TOMORROW, Tuesday, July 26, 2022, at 11 a.m. at the Riverdale Town Center.
“Georgia’s Gold Star Fathers are truly deserving of this special tribute, and I am honored to name a portion of Highway 139 after these loving fathers,” said Rep. Burnough. “It is evident that fathers grieve differently and deserve opportunities to connect with other fathers who have experienced the same loss. This highway sign will not replace their child, but they will know we have not forgotten their sacrifice.”
During the event, Rep. Burnough will unveil the new sign that will mark the Gold Star Fathers of Georgia Highway. The ceremony will also include the following guest speakers: Arthur Hughes, veteran; Rufus Bundrige, coordinator of the Southeast Region Navy Gold Star organization; Georgia Gold Star Father Carey Brown; and former radio personality Myronda Jenkins.
During the 2022 legislative session, Rep. Burnough introduced House Resolution 572 to dedicate portion of State Route 139 from Church Street to State Route 85 in Clayton County as the Gold Star Fathers of Georgia Highway. Rep. Burnough’s resolution was included in House Resolution 820, which served as the General Assembly’s annual highway/road dedication legislation.
The gold star represents a family member who has died in the line of duty while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. The first statewide remembrance for Gold Star Fathers was held at the Georgia State Capitol on November 9, 2017. During the 2018 legislative session, the Georgia House of Representatives unanimously adopted House Resolution 655, which seeks to recognize “Gold Star Father’s Day” on November 9 annually in the state. U.S. Reps. Hank Johnson and Drew Ferguson have also introduced bipartisan legislation to nationally recognize Gold Star Fathers on November 9.
