ATLANTA – State Representative Rhonda Taylor (D-Conyers) today issued a statement on Senate Bill 632 and its impact on seniors in Rockdale County. Senate Bill 632 increased the Rockdale County School District senior homestead exemption to $50,000. Rep. Taylor has worked on similar legislation for several years, and sponsored this bill in the House during the 2022 legislative session.
“It is well known that I have worked for several years at the Capitol to give seniors in Rockdale County some relief on their property taxes,” said Rep. Taylor. “Although the resolution passed by the board of education members was presented in the Senate first, it was our collaborative work that made it possible. The data finally arrived this week from the Rockdale County Tax Commissioner’s Office, and it is impressive.”
According to data received from the Rockdale County Tax Commissioner’s office, the impact of the 2023 senior exemption is as follows:
- Seniors in Rockdale were assessed $1.62 million less in school taxes in 2023 than they would have had without the increase.
- Additionally, 349 seniors were assessed no school tax in 2023 as opposed to 128 that would have been assessed had the increase not happened.
“I am very proud of this accomplishment,” added Rep. Taylor. “It took some time to get it done, but it was well worth the time and energy spent. SB 632 is a start, not an end. It is my desire to eventually exempt seniors over 70 years of age from paying any school board taxes.”
