ATLANTA – State Representative Rhonda Taylor (D-Conyers) recently sponsored six Rockdale County Public Schools (RCPS) students for the National Black Caucus of State Legislators’ (NBCSL) annual Youth Legislative Assembly on Tuesday, Nov. 30.
“I am very proud of how these students represented Rockdale County Public Schools at the State Capitol,” said Rep. Taylor. “The NBCSL Youth Legislative Assembly serves as a gateway for students to learn and understand how laws are created in Georgia. It was an honor to sponsor this group of students from Rockdale County, who, without a doubt, shine as leaders in their own schools and beyond.”
The NBCSL collaborated with the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus to host high school students from across the metro Atlanta area at the Georgia State Capitol. The following RCPS students participated in the event: Daisy Contreras, Rockdale County High School; Cedric Houston, Heritage High School; Jarius White, Salem High School; and Amani Roberson, Hector Aguirre and Madison Jackson from the Rockdale Magnet School for Science and Technology.
During the Youth Legislative Assembly, students met with state legislators and learned more about the legislative process in the Georgia General Assembly. The students were able to participate in a mock legislative session and were able to develop claims on topics of interest, such as access to college tuition funding or determining required courses for graduation. These students also met with YelloPain, who released the single “My Vote Don’t Count,” about participating in elections. These students also learned about potential internship opportunities with state legislators and toured the State Capitol.
This NBCSL Youth Legislative Assembly is part of the caucus’ annual legislative conference.
Representative Rhonda Taylor represents the citizens of District 91, which includes portions of DeKalb and Rockdale counties. She was elected to the House of Representatives in 2020 and currently serves on the Juvenile Justice, Budget and Fiscal Affairs Oversight and Special Rules committees.
