Special Session on Redistricting Begins Tomorrow
ATLANTA – State Representative Rob Leverett (R-Elberton), chairman of the House Committee on Reapportionment and Redistricting, today announced the release of the newly proposed remedial House district map, which will be eligible for consideration during the upcoming special legislative session.
“As chairman of the House Committee on Reapportionment and Redistricting, I am pleased to announce the committee’s proposed district maps are now available for public review,” said Rep. Leverett. “As we approach the special legislative session, I look forward to working alongside my fellow committee members and colleagues across the hall to ensure this body produces legislative and congressional district maps that embody fair and equal representation of Georgia’s changing demographics, while keeping in full accordance with the provisions of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.”
“This map meets the promise we made when this process began: it fully complies with the judge’s order, while also following Georgia’s traditional redistricting principles,” said House Speaker Jon Burns (R-Newington). “Chairman Leverett has navigated a complicated process with bipartisan engagement, and we look forward to passing this fair redistricting plan for the Georgia House of Representatives.”
The proposed remedial House districts and maps can be found here on the Legislative and Congressional Reapportionment Office’s website. The draft map will become part of legislation, which will be introduced by Chairman Leverett in the near future and will be assigned by Speaker Burns to the House Committee on Reapportionment and Redistricting for consideration.
A joint public comment portal designed by the General Assembly has been made available to the public to allow for maximum input by citizens during the redistricting process. This portal, which is now open and will be accessible during the special legislative session, gives Georgians the opportunity to submit comments to the House Committee on Reapportionment and Redistricting. Submitted comments will be automatically posted to the General Assembly’s website as public record that is accessible to all. To access the public comment portal, please click here.
Representative Rob Leverett represents the citizens of District 123, which includes Elbert, Lincoln and Wilkes counties, as well as portions of Columbia and Madison counties. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 2020 and currently serves as Chairman of the Reapportionment & Redistricting Committee and Secretary of the Judiciary Committee. He also serves on the Agriculture & Consumer Affairs, Governmental Affairs, Judiciary Non-Civil and Juvenile Justice committees.
