ATLANTA – State Representative Robert Flournoy, Jr. (D-Hampton) was recently selected by Speaker Jon Burns to participate in the 2025 Georgia Legislative Leadership Institute (GLLI), which took place from July 31 – August 3, 2025.
“Many thanks to Speaker Burns for nominating me to participate in this prestigious program designed to help expand on my leadership skills as a freshman legislator,” said Rep. Flournoy. “As state legislators, it is crucial that we continue learning and advancing our knowledge of policy and issues that affect our constituents and communities. The skills that I gained will allow me to better and more effectively represent the people of the 74th House District and those who reside in Clayton and Henry counties. I look forward to returning to the Gold Done come January and bringing those lessons with me in order to better serve Georgians.”
Hosted by the Carl Vinson Institute of Government at the University of Georgia, GLLI brought together select freshman legislators nominated by Speaker Burns and Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones. Throughout the institute, participants engaged in peer learning opportunities, interactive session and breakout discussions.
During this program, Rep. Flournoy worked with faculty, legislative leaders and other participants. The program’s curriculum is designed to help legislators develop personal, ethical and political leadership skills, with the goal of enabling them to better fulfill their roles. Discussions covered leadership styles, personal motivations, the ethical use of power and how to create collective action. Participants also analyzed policy issues, gained understanding of how citizens organize and reflected on their vital role in upholding democracy.
Since its inception in 2005, GLLI has trained more than 200 Georgia legislators in essential leadership skills and collaborative governance. The three-and-a-half-day program is designed to help new legislators develop and strengthen their abilities to become more effective leaders and informed decision-makers in the Georgia General Assembly.
Representative Robert Flournoy, Jr. represents the citizens of District 74, which includes portions of Clayton and Henry counties. He was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2024 and currently serves on the Energy, Utilities & Telecommunications, State Planning & Community Affairs and State Properties committees.
