Rep. Sandra Scott Addresses High School Seniors at Georgia Girls State Conference at Valdosta State University

ATLANTA – State Representative Sandra Scott (D-Rex) recently addressed more than 200 high school senior girls during the Georgia Girls State Conference at Valdosta State University. The annual leadership development program seeks to empower young women with firsthand knowledge of civic engagement and legislative processes.

Rep. Scott’s speech, titled, ‘You Belong in the Room: Understanding Government and Finding Your Power,’ aimed to guide the students through how state government works and the role they can play in shaping Georgia’s future. She then shared examples of the legislation she has introduced.

“You already have the power—you just have to use it,” said Rep. Scott. During her speech, she also reminded the students that at 17½ years old, they are eligible to register to vote and that at 18, they can cast their first ballot. “Your voice is your power. Use it,” added Rep. Scott.

Rep. Scott also offered an explanation of Georgia’s three branches of government, the structure of the General Assembly and how laws are made. Students were then tasked with drafting legislation on various subjects for debate during the conference.

“I was impressed and inspired by the passion and creativity in their proposals,” said Rep. Scott. “These young women are already leading. They don’t need to wait to be older, richer or more experienced. They are enough right now just as they are.”

Rep. Scott concluded by encouraging the students to get involved in their communities through local campaigns, civic clubs, town halls and by visiting the Georgia Capitol. She shared her contact information and extended an open invitation to connect directly with her office.

Representative Sandra Scott represents the citizens of District 76, which includes a portion of Clayton County. She was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2010 and currently serves on the Banks & Banking, Defense & Veterans Affairs, Human Relations & Aging, Insurance and Reapportionment and Redistricting committees.
