Rep. Sandra Scott Commends Clayton County Delegation on Successful Legislative Session

ATLANTA — State Representative Sandra Scott (D-Rex), Chair of the Clayton County legislative delegation, commended the delegation for its work during the 2016 legislative session. Other delegation members include: Reps. Demetrius Douglas (D-Stockbridge), Mike Glanton (D-Jonesboro), Darryl Jordan (D-Riverdale), Ronnie Mabra (D-Fayetteville), Valencia Stovall (D-Lake City), and Keisha Waites (D-Atlanta).

“The 2016 session was a great year for the Clayton County delegation, where we saw a number of bills pass both the House and Senate and are currently on the Governor’s desk for consideration,” said Rep. Scott. “All of our delegation members sponsored or co-sponsored legislation that saw final passage this session, and I do not know of another delegation of the same size to accomplish this in the past. I am proud to salute the Clayton County delegation on a job well done and commend them on their hard work and sending their bills to Governor Deal.”

The following eight bills authored by members of the Clayton County delegation received final passage from the House and Senate during the 2016 legislative session:

  • House Bill 54, the Fallen Heroes Bill, sponsored by Rep. Waites, would provide tuition assistance to the children of fallen public safety officials through a voluntary donation option on Georgia Income Tax and Motor Vehicle Driver’s License forms.

  • House Bill 804, sponsored by Rep. Mabra, would add a fifth judge to the Superior Court in the Clayton Judicial Circuit.

  • House Bill 807, sponsored by Rep. Stovall, will create one or more community improvement districts within Clayton County and each of its municipalities. HB 807 was signed by Gov. Deal on March 31 and will take effect on July 1, 2016.

  • House Resolution 1342, sponsored by Rep. Douglas, urges local school boards to allow for more recess time for children to receive the daily recommended allotment of physical activity by the American Academy of Pediatrics.

  • House Bill 736 includes language from House Bill 717, legislation originally authored by Rep. Scott, and will create a special license plate for female veterans in Georgia.

  • House Bill 751, the Fiscal Year 2017 budget, includes language and a budget allocation incorporated from House Bill 913, legislation originally authored by Rep. Scott, to create a women veteran’s program and coordinator position within the Georgia Department of Veterans Services to address the specific needs of female veterans.

  • House Bill 959 includes language from House Bill 814, or the Educating Children of Military Families Act, legislation originally authored by Rep. Glanton, which would establish a unique identifier for each student whose parent or guardian is an active duty military or reserve member of the armed forces of the United States or the National Guard.

Of the legislation passed, HB 807 was signed by Gov. Deal on March 31, and HR 1342 does not require the governor’s signature. The governor has until May 3 to consider the remaining bills.
