ATLANTA – State Representative Sandra Scott (D-Rex) today announced the introduction of House Bill 117, legislation prohibiting employers from requesting account information from current or prospective employees for the purpose of accessing personal social media.“Too often the privacy rights of Georgians are unnecessarily being violated by employers,” said Rep. Scott. “I hope this bill will stop employers from accessing such personal information, and help further protect our constituents.”
HB 117 addresses the relationship between employers and employees, or future employees, concerning social media privacy. The bill would accomplish this by prohibiting employers from requesting username, password, or other means of accessing an account of an employee, or future employee, in order to access personal social media. In this bill, social media may include any electronic service, account, or content such as; videos, blogs, photographs, video blogs, podcasts, text messages, email, online accounts, or website profiles.
