ATLANTA – State Representative Sandra Scott (D-Rex) recently introduced House Resolution 210 to urge the U.S. Congress to enact the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.
“The time is now for Congress to enact the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act,” said Rep. Scott. “Voter suppression is real in Georgia and across the U.S. It is imperative for Congress to act now because our democracy is at stake, and I encourage residents in Georgia to call their elected officials in Washington, D.C. regarding this legislation.”
Rep. Scott’s legislation highlights the history and importance of the federal Voting Rights Act, as well as commends the late U.S. Rep. Lewis’ work to expand and uphold voting rights for U.S. citizens. Through HR 210, Rep. Scott seeks to ensure that voting rights for minority groups, including Black voters and other people of color, are strengthened for future elections.
“We are still fighting every day for true criminal justice reform, and now we have to fight for black and brown people to have the right to vote,” added Rep. Scott. “Voting should be one of the easiest things we can do in Georgia. Therefore, I am urging Congress to do the right thing and pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.”
Named in honor of the late civil rights activist and congressman, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act seeks to end racial discrimination in voting by strengthening the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
