ATLANTA – State Representative Kim Schofield (D-Atlanta) today issued the following farewell statement to recognize and thank the late U.S. Congressman John Lewis for his life of sacrifice, servanthood, public service and leadership on behalf of citizens in House District 60:
“At this moment in our nation, let us draw strength from the words of Congressman Lewis, ‘You cannot be afraid to speak up and speak out for what you believe. You have to have courage, raw courage.’ His life reflected a strong man of courage. I am proud to walk and share in his courageous strength. ‘Good Trouble’ is my middle name.
“Congressman Lewis was a renowned civil rights leader who inspired people to take action, and he spent his life fighting for racial justice. He stood firm on his conviction that not one of us can rest, be happy, be at home or be at peace with ourselves until we end hatred and division.
“Congressman Lewis’ legacy stands on the premise that ‘[our] vote is the most powerful, non-violent tool we have in a democratic society. We must not allow the power of the vote to be neutralized. We must never [and will never] go back.’ Every time the polls open, we will be there.
“Our work in House District 60 continues. Congressman Lewis may have taken his last breath; he may no longer walk among us, but he has laid a clear path for all to follow. Let his work continue to speak. Let his actions of engagement, community, justice and the power of voting for all citizens in House District 60 and all across Georgia live in us, around us, through us and beyond us.
“Congressman John Lewis you will be missed, and we will continue to tell your story. Thank you, sir, for serving the citizens in House District 60. Rest now and rest assured that ‘Rep. K.I.M.’ will ‘Keep it Moving’ in House District 60.”
Representative Kim Schofield represents the citizens of District 60, which includes portions of Clayton and Fulton counties. She was elected to the House of Representatives in 2017 and currently serves on the Health & Human Services, Interstate Cooperation and Small Business Development committees.
