ATLANTA – State Representative Scott Hilton (R–Peachtree Corners), recently received the 2023 Champion for Charter Schools Award from the National Alliance of Public Charter Schools.
“I am honored to receive the Champion for Charter Schools Award and want to thank the National Alliance of Public Charter Schools for honoring me with such an esteemed recognition,” said Rep. Hilton. “As Vice Chairman of the House Committee on Education, it has been a longtime commitment of mine to ensure every child in Georgia receives a high-quality public education. The role of charter schools is crucial to providing enhanced and effective learning environments for Georgia’s students, and I intend to continue to fight for Georgia’s education sector to make certain that all Georgia students are supported in their educational endeavors.”
Rep. Hilton is one of 18 other state and local lawmakers from across the country to receive this year’s award. The alliance highlighted that the honorees were chosen for their efforts in supporting high-quality public education options for students. The alliance also recognized Rep. Hilton for his efforts to enhance charter school funding through his work on House Bill 318, legislation introduced during the 2023 legislative session that seeks to increase transparency for charter school funding, protect charter autonomy and increase support for both local and state-approved charter schools by shifting all charter school oversight authority to a single government agency. HB 318 will be eligible for consideration during the 2024 legislative session.
“This bipartisan group of lawmakers has fought for students, families and high-quality public education options in their states,” said Nina Rees, president and CEO of the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools. “We celebrate and commend their work in state capitols and city halls and for putting the interests of students and families first. The ability for public charter schools to innovate and serve more families and communities is possible due to the sound policy put forth by lawmakers like our 2023 champions. Please join us in expressing gratitude to these leaders for their steadfast support of public charter schools.”
The National Alliance for Public Charter Schools is the leading national nonprofit organization committed to advancing the charter school movement. Its mission is to lead public education to unprecedented levels of academic achievement by fostering a strong charter school movement.
